Other Info: For Active Service. According CWGC, Francis died on 17th October 1916. He is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 7c. His parents later lived at 103 Beaconsfield Road, Hastings.
Francis Bissenden was my mother’s father. She, Gladys Gertrude Bissenden (Wright) was born in April 30, 1916 and never met her father. Mom’s mother Caroline Ellen Bissenden (nee Lepper) remarried a William Wright. When mom was about 8, she along with older brother Frank and parents emigrated to Canada and settled in Thunder Bay (then Fort William) Ontario. (Thank you to Michelle Sim for this information).

Just noticed that my grandfather’s brother was also killed in WW1 on the Front Lines. I couldn’t even imagine the trauma to their parents. If there any way to find out if there were other children and if they have any living relatives today?
Both Francis James and Charles Ernest Bissenden are listed on the War Memorial in Christ Church Blacklands Hastings - it would have been their parents parish church. I will be writting a small piece for the parish magazine (probably for the September 2023 edition) about the Memorial and I will be mentioning Francis and Charles
