This man was baptised 1 May 1895, St Leonards church, when the family was of 65 Marina, his father a lodging house keeper. The family was there in the 1901 census, his father 48, born Hastings, his mother 41, born Yorkshire. All three children were born in St Leonards, and there were two servants.

His father John Wisdom Sutton was at 71 Vale Road in the 1911 census, again a lodging house keeper, and again with the three children. “Jack” was 16, clerk to a solicitor’s.

The father died in 1921 at 43 Alma Terrace, the next street over from Vale Road. His widow died at the same address in 1926.
