Other Info: He died aged 31, along with over 750 other seamen, when HMS Bulwark exploded due to an internal explosion on 26th November 1914. He is remembered at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Panel 2. According to CWGC George was married to Minnie Kate Colbran and living at ‘Niton’, 8 Spencer Hill, Wimbledon, London.

Other Info: Lost his life on HMS Aboukir when it was sunk, along with sister ships HMS Hogue and HMS Cressy, by German submarine U-9 on 22nd September 1914. He was one of 1,459 seamen lost in the incident. He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, on panel 4.

Other Info: Henry was aboard HMS Laurentic, an armed merchant cruiser, when she struck two mines on 25th January 1917. Aged 27, he was among 354 passengers and crew that went down with the ship. 121 people were saved. Henry is remembered at Portsmouth Naval Memorial, panel 27.

Henry is not named on Hastings War Memorial.

Other Info: Ernest was on board HMS Queen Mary when it took part in the Battle of Heligoland. He went on to serve aboard HMS Fortune, and was among the 68 lost when it was sunk on 1st June 1916 during the Battle of Jutland. He is remembered at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, on panel 14

Other Info: The text of ‘Three Jolly Sailors’ reads: “Photograph of three local sailors taken in China whilst serving on HMS Minotaur. They travelled 38,750 miles since the commencement of War up to January 1915, when they were sent to different ships.

He went through the Jutland Battle without a scratch and his father received a letter from him on the Sunday before the Hampshire went down, saying he was quite well and hoped to be home shortly to tell them about the great battle. But he lost his life with Lord Kitchener on the Hampshire. He was awarded a medal of merit on April the 4th 1916 on leaving the Warspite training ship.

According to CWGC, Frederick died aged 21 when HMS Hampshire was sunk by a mine on 5th June 1916. Field Marshall Lord Kitchener and his staff on board and among 737 lost. Frederick is remembered at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, on panel 12.

*I have assumed that ‘Jack’ is how Frederick preferred to be known as there are three references to him being on only son. If Jack and Frederick are two different individuals, please let me know!

Other Info: According to CWGC, Percy died on 15th March 1917 when his ship SS Bray Head was attacked by German submarine U-44 and sunk with the loss of 21 lives. Percy is remembered at Portsmouth Naval Memorial, panel 28.
