William’s photograph was also published in the Hastings & St Leonards Observer on 2nd November 1918 reporting that he had been killed in action.

Other Info: According to CWGC, Alfred died aged 23 at the rank of Lance Corporal on 19th April 1916. He is remembered at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, panel 24-26-28-30.

Grammar School Roll of Honour reads: “Lance Corporal Alfred Etheridge, Machine Gun Section, 13th Canadian Battalion, who was killed in action on 19th April. He was well known in Hastings prior to emigrating to Canada. He attended Hastings Grammar school for about three years, successfully passing the Senior Cambridge Local. Upon relinquishing his position as a pupil teacher at Priory Road School he left for Canada in June 1910, joining the staff at the Bank of Ottawa at Cobolt (Ontario).

Subsequently he was transferred to Regina (Sask.), and later to the same branch at Vancouver, B.C. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in November 1914, and took part in the memorable engagements around Fostubert in June 1915. He was slightly wounded in January last. After recently undergoing a special course of machine gun training he rejoined his Battalion and was killed while in charge of his gun during a terrific bombardment. A letter has been received from the officer commanding stating that he stuck to his gun cool and collected to the last. He was the fourth son of Mr A G Etheridge, 18 Whitefriars Road, Hastings.
