“Particular pathos is attached to the death from wounds received in action of Sergeant J. H. Allen, of Fairwarp.

He had been at the front almost from the commencement of the war, and about a month ago wrote to his wife telling her to cheer up, as he was one of four Sergeants chosen to come home as instructors. Three days after receiving this welcome letter Mrs Allen had a wire from the War Office saying that her husband had been dangerously wounded. He was brought to England, and placed in a hospital at Epsom, where, however, owing to the exceptionally severe nature of his wounds, which were caused by shrapnel, he passed away on Saturday. The injuries, which were in various parts of the body, were sustained on June 24^th. During the last week of the soldier’s life his wife was able to be with and nurse him, a privilege which gave them both much happiness, and lessened the blow to the young widow, who is left with a child less than two years old, and which Sergeant Allen has only seen on one or two occasions, it having been born after he went to the front.
