My grandfather JF Purcell commanded the Rand Rifles in the SWA campaign until it was disbanded in 1915. It was a temporary regiment created in 1914

Hi Malachy. Thank you for the information. What happened to the men serving with the Rand Rifles when the regiment was disbanded?

Sorry – only saw this now! My grandfather enlisted with the SA Overseas Expeditionary Force that formed the !st SA Brigade went to France and North Africa. It was a voluntary choice. I assume most joined the 4 regiments that went to France or those that went to East Africa under Smuts
