Other Info: Recently promoted (as of October 1914). Victor was one of 650 lost when HMS Hampshire was sunk by a mine on 5th June 1916. Field Marshall Lord Kitchener and his staff were also on board and lost. Victor is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, on panel 11.

Other Info: Was one of 524 officers and men that went down with HMS Hawke when it was sunk by German submarine U9 on 15th October 1914. He was 32 years old. Employed before the war as second assistant clerk to the Guardians. His father was for many years a tax collector. Frederick is remembered at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on panel 6.

Other Info: Was one of 524 officers and men that went down with HMS Hawke when it was sunk by German submarine U9 on 15th October 1914. He was 19 years old. Before the war he was a butcher at Messrs Hickman’s shop in Robertson Street. His Great Grandfather was Mayor of Hastings 8 times. John is remembered at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on panel 7.

Other Info: Gun Layer, First Class. With the First Battle Squadron in the North Sea. According to the ships log, George Stroud was lost overboard at 2.27am on 7th November 1915 when the ship was hit by two large waves due to it travelling too fast for the conditions. The waves smashed the bridge and chart room and wrecked the conning tower. Large quantities of water flooded the fore turret and decks below. Also swept overboard was Commander George Russell Nixon. Two other men were killed and fourteen injured in the same incident. George is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Address: 117 Queens Road, Hastings

Other Info: Was in the naval engagement in the Heligoland Bight.

Was on the Queen Mary when she was sunk in the action off Jutland on 31st May 1915. His father is well known as an employee of the telephone service and a Lieutenant in the Blacklands CLB. The lost sailor was a bugler and joined the Navy six years ago, having previously been a naval volunteer. He was a good shot, and when 14 years of age won the boy’s challenge cup at Bisley.

According to CWGC, Bertram was 22 when he died and is remembered at Portsmouth Naval Memorial on panel 12. He was born in Charlton, London and his parents later lived in Bexhill.
