Other Info: Lost on HMS Ramsey. According to CWGC, John died aged 21 on 8th August 1915 when the ship was sunk with the loss of 55 men by German minesweeper Meteor. He is remembered at Portsmouth Naval Memorial on panel 10.

Other Info: The text of ‘Died at Toronto’ reads: … We regret to announce the death of Sergeant J Thompson, son of Mr and Mrs Jim Thompson of the ‘First in, Last Out’ Inn, High Street, Hastings. It occurred at Exhibition Camp, Toronto on April 27th. Sergeant Thompson, only three weeks before, proceeded from Brompton to Toronto to act as instructor and qualify for a commission. On the morning after arrival he complained of not feeling well and was removed to hospital in an ambulance. He died of pleuro-pneumonia. Age 32 years. He was well known in Canada as a man of strength and sterling character. He leaves a wife but no children.

According to CWGC, John is remembered at Toronto (St James) Cemetery, grave reference Blk D (Ravine). Lot 73. South.
