Other Info: Was one of 524 officers and men that went down with HMS Hawke when it was sunk by German submarine U9 on 15th October 1914. He was 27 years old with 12 years service in the Navy. Frederick is remembered at the Chatham Naval Memorial on panel 6.

Bertram appears to be recorded on Hastings War memorial as ‘E T Kirby’ – no one of that name appears on the CWGC website.

Employed before the war as second assistant clerk to the Guardians. His father was for many years a tax collector. Frederick is remembered at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on panel 6.

Other Info: Was one of 524 officers and men that went down with HMS Hawke when it was sunk by German submarine U9 on 15th October 1914. He was 19 years old. Before the war he was a butcher at Messrs Hickman’s shop in Robertson Street. His Great Grandfather was Mayor of Hastings 8 times. John is remembered at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on panel 7.

The text for ‘A Winning Crew’ reads: A crew on board HMS Neptune, winners of the RNR and RNVR race at the squadron regatta, 1915. The man on the left, sitting on the ground is James Newington, brother of Mrs Martin…. Another Hastings man, W Larkins, is third from the left in the second row from the back.

Other Info: At Walmer. Was one of the survivors aboard HMS Bayano which was torpedoed on March 11th 1915. He was saved (after clinging to rafts for five hours with other members of the crew) by Captain J Foster and the crew of Balmarino. Mr Rolfe was taken to County Hospital, Ayr with three others. He was most kindly treated. Then he was taken to Portsmouth and from there sent home for 14 days leave. He has now returned to Portsmouth.
