Other Info: Alfred Jinks died aged 20 on 29th May 1916. He is buried at Bully-Grenay Communal Cemetery, British Extension, grave reference I.A.2. He is also remembered on a family grave at Hastings Cemetery.

Alfred Newman Jinks was born in St Leonards on Sea in 1896.
In the 1901 census the family was at 25 Alma Terrace, St Leonards on Sea. He was the youngest of five children. His father, William Newman Jinks, was a carpenter and his mother was Sarah, a laundress.
In the 1911 census at 11 Grosvenor Crescent, St Leonards on Sea, he was a 14 year-old "house boy" servant in the household of Alfred Stewart Raikes, a 54-year old retired minister in the diplomatic service, whose household consisted of himself and three servants.
In the same census his family was at 36 Alma Terrace, father a house decorator. His siblings were a hotel porter, paper hanger, house painter and a tailoress.
On the 14 October 1915, at Hampstead, he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, 138th (Hampstead) Battery. He was of 53 Bohemia Road, St Leonards on Sea, and was a decorator. His father was of that address. He went "overseas" on the 13 April 1916.
His mother died on the 28 March 1930, when her husband was of Bohemia Road. His father died at 53 Bohemia Road on the 11 March 1943.
Alfred's brother William Arthur Jinks joined the the Royal Navy in 1902 for a 12 year engagement and became an Able Seaman. As a seaman, living at Battle, Sussex, he joined the Machine Gun Corps in 1916.
