  1. In the 1911 census, living at 34 Horntye Road were Charles Lane (42), his wife of 22 years, Ada Lane (40), and four of their six surviving children: Ivy (16), Iris (11), Marguerite (9) and John (5). In 1901, the family were in the parish of St Leonard, Hastings, with Ivy and Iris and their two elder children, Harold (8) and Lily (11). Forces Records has an entry for Private Harold Lane of the Royal Sussex Regiment, service number L/9110. It also records that Harold Lane, of the Second Battalion Royal Sussex was listed as wounded on the Casualty List issued by the War Office on 12 October 1915. This was reported on page 3 of the Brighton Gazette, 23 October 1915.
