J R Vuillemin

J R Vuillemin

Rank: Sergeant Fusilier-Mitrailleur

Service: French Army

Other Info: Has been twice wounded. He sent us (the newspaper) the portrait with best wishes to Hastings friends and the following letter; “Dear Sir, – Excuse my pencil, please, but I am in the trenches today, and my pen holder is broken. You have to excuse my poor English too, as I am a Frenchman; an old Hastings admirer; more an old Hastings lover. In 1914, when war broke out, I was at the Berlitz’s School, and was Mrs Cox’s (13 Marina, St Leonards) boarder. Owing to her I get your most interesting ‘Pictorial’ very often, so I have news of good old Hastings chaps; Syd Smith, F Cox etc. I do not think the ‘Pictorial’ readers will recognise me, as I have moustaches today. Nevertheless, you’ll see me in the same costume I had on the Pier or on the most charming Hastings cliffs. Wishing you and your paper all the success you deserve, I am, yours faithfully, J R Vuillemin.
