Other Info: According to CWGC, Percy died on 15th March 1917 when his ship SS Bray Head was attacked by German submarine U-44 and sunk with the loss of 21 lives. Percy is remembered at Portsmouth Naval Memorial, panel 28.

The text for ‘A Winning Crew’ reads: A crew on board HMS Neptune, winners of the RNR and RNVR race at the squadron regatta, 1915. The man on the left, sitting on the ground is James Newington, brother of Mrs Martin…. Another Hastings man, W Larkins, is third from the left in the second row from the back.

Other Info: At Walmer. Was one of the survivors aboard HMS Bayano which was torpedoed on March 11th 1915. He was saved (after clinging to rafts for five hours with other members of the crew) by Captain J Foster and the crew of Balmarino. Mr Rolfe was taken to County Hospital, Ayr with three others. He was most kindly treated. Then he was taken to Portsmouth and from there sent home for 14 days leave. He has now returned to Portsmouth.
