He is well known in the town, having been goalkeeper in the Junior Champion team in the Sussex Water Polo competition, captain on of the YMCA Swimming Club, and instructor of the Royal Life Saving Society (Hastings Swimming Club Branch).

His is an old campaigner, having served in the Sudan War and for three years and six months in the South African War.
