The text for ‘A Winning Crew’ reads: A crew on board HMS Neptune, winners of the RNR and RNVR race at the squadron regatta, 1915. The man on the left, sitting on the ground is James Newington, brother of Mrs Martin…. Another Hastings man, W Larkins, is third from the left in the second row from the back.

Other Info: Not sure what R.N.B.R means. Date of Birth was 3rd June 1884 in Hollington. He died in 1971 aged 86 years. Ernest was married in 1919 to Dorothea Woodthorpe at Spilsby Registration District, Lincolnshire.

Other Info: At Walmer. Was one of the survivors aboard HMS Bayano which was torpedoed on March 11th 1915. He was saved (after clinging to rafts for five hours with other members of the crew) by Captain J Foster and the crew of Balmarino. Mr Rolfe was taken to County Hospital, Ayr with three others. He was most kindly treated. Then he was taken to Portsmouth and from there sent home for 14 days leave. He has now returned to Portsmouth.
