Other Info: Wounded for a second time. Now in hospital in Shropshire. Formerly of the Hastings Observer and Pictorial Advertiser.

“… has gained the Military Medal which was presented to him last Sunday morning after Church Parade at Tunbridge Wells, by the Colonel in Command. After Church Parade the Battalion was marched back to the Parade Ground, and Private Dabson called to the front. The Colonel then said that it gave him great pleasure to decorate one of the 5th, and complimented him on his deed. Prior to pinning on the medal he read out what gained it: ‘On several occasions Private Dabson showed great devotion to duty and bravery in rescuing wounded men from No Mans Land under heavy shell fire.’ The Colonel warmly shook hands with Private Dabson, as did all the other officers.

Other Info: Drowned at sea on 28th January 1917. According to CWGC, John was serving aboard HM Trawler Jacamar when he died. HM Jacamar was sunk in a collision in the English Channel off of Folkestone.

John is remembered at Portsmouth Naval Memorial, on panel 27.

Additional Info: An article published in the Hastings & St Leonards Observer on 31st March 1917 reads; “We regret to learn that Walter Lewis (Son of our townsman, Mr J. J. Lewis, late R.S.M., 6th Dragoon Guards) is, after being missing for months, reported as killed.

According to CWGC, Walter died on 23rd July 1916. He is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 15B.

The photograph was sent in and perhaps the handwriting was misinterpreted, however the uniform matches that of the Cameron Highlanders.
