Other Info: Believed to be the only member of the fishing fraternity who has joined the Army. Charley is well known in the Old Town and comes of a very old fishing family. He was reported missing after the Battle of Vezennes (Sic) on August 30th. One brother is serving in the Royal Fleet Reserve, another is in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and another is Captain of the local fishing boat ‘Mayflower’

Text from the top image reads: ‘This photograph was sent home by Ernest Penfold, a prisoner of war in Germany. It was forwarded to us by his Mother, Mrs Penfold, Mount House, Old London Road, Hastings. Penfold is the Englishman in the centre of the back row’.
