Other Info: Stephen died aged 16 on 19th December 1914. He is buried at Hastings Cemetery. The inscription on his grave marker reads ‘Rest in Peace, though death divides, fond memories cling’.

Private Bumstead’s funeral was reported in the Hastings & St Leonards Pictorial Advertisor in December 1914. The text reads: “… the mortal remains of Private Stephen James Bumstead, aged 16 years, a young territorial of the 5th Royal Sussex Regiment, were laid to rest at Hastings Borough Cemetery, being accorded full military honours. About one hundred of his comrades followed under the command of Colonel Lloyd.”
