Other Info: An article published in the Hastings & St Leonards Observer on 31st October 1914 reports “The sad news has been received that Mr Charles Arthur Beaney, of 57 Norman Road, St Leonards, was killed on the ‘Falcon’ destroyer, during the recent bombardment of German forces by our Fleet. Mr Beaney was a single man, aged 38, and was a Petty Officer. What makes his death more distressing is that quite recently a married brother, a Postman between Battle and Westfield, was lost on the ‘Hogue’.

HMS Hogue was sunk along with her sister ships HMS Aboukir and HMS Cressy, by German submarine U-9 on 22nd September 1914. Albert was one of 1,459 seamen lost on that day.

According to CWGC, Albert died aged 35 and is remembered at Chatham Naval Memorial on Panel 2.

Other Info: Archibald was one of 843 crew lost when HMS Vanguard exploded whilst in port on 9th July 1917. According to CWGC, Archibald is remembered at the Chatham Naval Memorial, on panel 21.

Other Info: Killed on 25th April 1916. John was killed when HMS Conquest was engaging the German battlecruisers who had attacked Yarmouth. The ship was hit by a shell that killed 25 and wounded 15.

John is remembered at the Chatham Naval Memorial on panel 16.

Other Info: According to CWGC, Arthur died aged 23 on 23rd March 1917. He was aboard the destroyer HMS Laforey when it struck a British laid mine. Only 18 on 76 crew survived. Arthur is remembered at  Chatham Naval Memorial on panel 25.

Other Info: According to CWGC, Japheth died aged 39 on 25th November 1916 whilst serving aboard HM Trawler Burnley. The British Navy hired trawler was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-4, off Orfordness. All 19 crew were lost. Jepheth is remembered at Chatham Naval Memorial on panel 16.

Other Info: According to CWGC Frederick died aged 39 on 21st July 1915. He was serving aboard the HM Trawler Briton when it struck a mine in the Thames Estuary. 11 crew were lost. Frederick is remembered at the Chatham Naval Memorial, on panel 9.
