Rank: Private

Regiment: Army Service Corps, Canadian Expeditionary Force

Wife: Mrs E M Jarvis (nee Bethell)

Home Address: 1 Verulum Place, St Leonards

Other Info: A sad interest attaches to the death of William Le Roy Jarvis, Canadian Army Service Corps, who has been with his Unit at St Leonards since Christmas. Mr Jarvis was an American from Florida, but joined up with the Canadian Contingent.

On 10th April he was married to Miss Bethell, a local lady, and although he had a cold at the time there was no indication that he was seriously ill. He died, however, on 26th April, after only being married 16 days. Much sympathy has been expressed with the widow by her many friends. The funeral took place with full military honours at the Borough Cemetery, the ceremony being conducted by Captain Burnett, a Canadian Chaplain. Mr Jarvis was immensely popular with the Unit, there being a large attendance of men, with the Officer commanding and others. Numerous handsome wreaths were sent, amongst others, by Captain Biggar, Officer commanding, and men of the Unit. Sisters of the Canadian Military Hospital at Frederick Road, Lieutenant and Mrs Donaldson, Mr & Mrs Burnett (West Hill, St Leonards), Mr & Mrs Gray, Mrs Long and Mrs Neal (Tonbridge), Miss Mayne, etc. The Widow sent a duplicate of her wedding bouquet. Mrs Jarvis up to the time of her marriage had been doing nursing at Epsom as war work.

He is buried at Hastings Cemetery. Born in Barnwood, Ohio, USA.

Cecil Allan Hewett

Rank: Warrant Officer

Regiment: Canadian Expeditionary Officer

Wife: Mrs Gertrude Hewett (nee Cage)

Parents: Mr & Mrs Benjamin James Hewett

Address: Ivy Villa, St Leonards on Sea

Other Info: A marriage was solemnised at Halstead on 19th April 1917 between Warrant Officer C. A. Hewett, Ivy Villa, St Leonards and Miss Gertrude Cage, 5th Base Hospital, Leicester and Orchard Cottage, Halstead, Kent, elder daughter of Mr & Mrs F. E. Cage. The officiating clergyman was the Rev F. E. Frampton, and a choral service was beautifully rendered, endorsed by a few very appropriate remarks from the reverend gentleman. The bride was attired in nurse’s uniform of the T Nursing Association, and was given away by her father and attended by her only sister, Miss J. Cage. Gunner A. Gibbs, C.E.F., acted as best man in the absence of Cadet Wingfield and Lieutenant H. Hewett. After the ceremony a breakfast and reception was help at the brides parents’ home. The happy couple left later for Brighton, where the honeymoon is being spent, previous to the bride resuming her duties at the Base Hospital and the groom and his unit in the C.E.F. at the Front. There was a large number of useful presents.

The photograph shows the bride and bridegroom leaving the church. The bridegroom is wearing his Q.M.S. uniform, the news of his promotion to warrant rank only arriving an hour before starting for church.
