Other Info: The paper article reads: “… I am sending a photograph of myself and comrades, also two Indians who are attached to the Indian Cavalry Corps. I am the only son of Mr & Mrs Fairbairn … and am standing with the cycle on the extreme left of the photograph. My chum, also with a cycle is on the extreme right. My chum, Sapper A W Heath, and I were both employees of the G.P.O. Engineering Department in Hastings. We are in the Signal Service of the Royal Engineers doing linesman duties, sometimes on cycles and sometimes on horses, according to the state of the weather and roads. This is a very dangerous occupation under shell fire.”

Wounded on 30th November 1917.

Other Info: Text Reads ‘He is 55 years of age, but is at the Front, and has two sons serving there also. Lance Corporal Grace is well known in Hastings as a driver and acted as chauffeur for a local gentleman for seven years. He hope the mention of the fact that he is serving in the field will induce some of the young men of the town to “shoulder arms and come out to help us”. He has been told that he is the oldest man from Hastings at the Front, but we do not know if that is the case.
