Rank: Private

Regiment: 6th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment

Parents: Mr & Mrs J T Gallop

Brothers: Albert Gallop, George Gallop & J Gallop

Address: 54 North Terrace, Halton, Hastings

Other Info: According to CWGC, Frederick died on 2nd July 1916. He is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 12d & 13b.

An article published in the Hastings & St Leonards Observer dated 2nd September reads: “Mr & Mrs J. T. Gallop if 4 North Terrace, Halton, have received the sad news from the War Office that their youngest son, Private F. C. Gallop, age 19 years, Middlesex Regiment, was killed in action between the 1st and 2nd July.

Deceased was one of the 2nd Hastings Troop of Boy Scouts who went to Lisbon. In November 1914 he enlisted in the R.A.M.C. but was discharged on medical grounds after being at Aldershot five weeks. In the early part of 1915 he tried to enter the Navy but failed; later on he tried the local Engineers, but failed on medical examination. Captain Tidehurst wrote thanking him for his effort, and his regret he had failed to pass.

In July 1915 he managed to enlist in the Middlesex Bantams, but on being sent to Mill Hill he was immediately passed to another Middlesex Regiment. After eight months training in England he was sent to France as a bomb thrower.

He was a member of the Incandescent Maintenance Department of the Gas Company. Mr. and Mrs. Gallop have three more sons in the Army.”
