Address: Wilting Farm Cottages, Hollington

Other Info: Lost his life on HMS Aboukir when it was sunk, along with sister ships HMS Hogue and HMS Cressy, by German submarine U-9 on 22nd September 1914. He was one of 1,459 seamen lost in the incident. He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, on panel 4.

Other Info: HMS Russell was struck by a mine in April 1916. Most of the crew were rescued, including Jack, although 125 crew were lost. Coincidentally, Jack’s brother’s ship, HMS King Edward VII was also struck by a mine and sunk in January 1916. He too survived the incident.
