John D FairbairnA W Heath

Rank: Sapper

Regiment: Signal Depot, Royal Engineers

Other Info: The paper article reads: “… I am sending a photograph of myself and comrades, also two Indians who are attached to the Indian Cavalry Corps. I am the only son of Mr & Mrs Fairbairn … and am standing with the cycle on the extreme left of the photograph. My chum, also with a cycle is on the extreme right. My chum, Sapper A W Heath, and I were both employees of the G.P.O. Engineering Department in Hastings. We are in the Signal Service of the Royal Engineers doing linesman duties, sometimes on cycles and sometimes on horses, according to the state of the weather and roads. This is a very dangerous occupation under shell fire.”
