James Huggett

James Huggett

Rank: Private

Regiment: 11th Battalion (Southdowns), Royal Sussex Regiment

Parents: Mr N & Mrs Huggett

Address: Fairfield Court, Brookland, Romney Marsh

Other Info: Fell nobly in action on 11th May 1916. According to CWGC, James is remembered at Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L’Avoue, grave reference III.F.6.

The text with the photograph reads: “… Three other sons (of Mr & Mrs Huggett) are serving their King & Country – T W Huggett, in the Royal Horse Artillery, Jesse Huggett in the Army Service Corps; and George S Huggett in the heroic Royal West Kent Regiment. Mrs Huggett also has six brothers in the Army.

____________________

For him no words – the best were only weak; could not express what love desires to speak.
For him no praise, no guerdon did he ask; To serve his king the all sufficient task

For him no tears – no idle tears be shed. No fading laurels on that lowly head.
He fought for England, and for her he fell. He did his duty then – and all is well.

He deemed it but a humble act to give his life and all, if Freedom thus might live.
And though he found the shock of battle rough, he would not shrink – the glory was enough.

For him the tomb within a nation’s heart, that will endure when crumbled stones depart.
For him the honour with the brave to stand, with those who were in danger, our right hand.

For him no empty epitaph of dust, but that  he kept for England safe her trust.
No, he’s not dead! but over a war’s loud swell, heard be his Captain’s call – and all is well.
