Other Info: …killed in action on 7th October 1916. He was the son of Councillor Dr Gray, J.P. and educated at Hurst Court College and ??borough College, where he played football for the college and was a corporal in the O.T.C. He left on his 19th year to take up his commission. On August 19th he was wounded and as bombing officer had several miraculous escapes. His ?? announcing his death, writes “It is with deepest regret that I have to inform you of your sons death in action on 7th this inst. He fell whilst leading his men in a gallant attempt to capture a German position. Since first joining the battalion he has always displayed the most ?? qualities and his loss is deeply ?? in all ranks. All ranks in the battalion are with me in offering you and yours our heartfelt sympathy in your irreparable loss”. Mr G M Gray had been destined for the Bar, for which he had shown a special predilection. Last November, Dr Gray’s eldest son was seriously wounded. The young man was six feet two inches in height which was rather against him as a junior officer.

According to CWGC, Gerald died aged 20 is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 11c.
