Other Info: Killed in action on 28th July 1916 aged 21. According to CWGC, Frederick is remembered at Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L’Avoue, grave reference III.K.12.

An article published in the Hastings & St Leonards Observer on 19th August reads: “Mr & Mrs F. W. Howell, 2, Zuriel Place, Old London Road, Hastings, have lost their son in the recent fighting. He was in the Royal Sussex Regiment, and was only 21 years of age. He joined up last November, went to the Front on July 1st and was killed on 28th July, the first day of his going into the firing line. Just before he was killed he had written a letter to his parents. Before joining the Army he assisted his father in a dairyman’s business which he carries on. He was an  old Clive Vale School boy, and later joined the Scouts.”
