This man was James William Cox. His family were living at 25 Vale Road in the 1911 census, he aged 29, born Islington, Middlesex, a general labourer, tramways [there was a tram depot a street away], Father was James, gas fitter, gas company.

On 6 Jan 1912, St Leonards, he married Elizabeth Annie Stephens, spinster.

He attested 28 Dec 1914, Hastings, when he was of 26 Alma Villas, platelayer. Had served in RFA Vols. Went to France, 31 May 1915, Discharged, 20 Apr 1919. He had a son, James Thomas, born 28 Aug 1913, Hastings.

The 1920 and 1922 electoral registers show James and Elizabeth living at 26 Alma Villas with Tom and Elizabeth Stephens, presumably her parents. This street is two streets away from Vale Road.
