I am the only son of Mr & Mrs Fairbairn … and am standing with the cycle on the extreme left of the photograph. My chum, also with a cycle is on the extreme right. My chum, Sapper A W Heath, and I were both employees of the G.P.O. Engineering Department in Hastings. We are in the Signal Service of the Royal Engineers\u00a0doing linesman duties, sometimes on cycles and sometimes on horses, according to the state of the weather and roads. This is a very dangerous occupation under shell fire.”<\/p>\n
