In the same census his family was at 36 Alma Terrace, father a house decorator. His siblings were a hotel porter, paper hanger, house painter and a tailoress.

On the 14 October 1915, at Hampstead, he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, 138th (Hampstead) Battery. He was of 53 Bohemia Road, St Leonards on Sea, and was a decorator. His father was of that address. He went “overseas” on the 13 April 1916.
