I believe Frank H Pomphrey of St Thomas’s Rd Hastings is probably my grandfather (1893-1965). He was posted to be bandmaster to the Governor of Madras around 1937. Married to Ethel Relf and had one son Leonard Harold Pomphrey (my father) born in 1924. Frank had many medals and also either the OBE or MBE, not sure which as they were all stolen. He eventually came back to England and lived out his last days in St Thomas’s Rd. I thought they lived at No. 54 not number 40, but the chances of there being two Frank H Pomphreys living almost next door to each other both of whom were bandsmen is probably pretty remote. Leonard Pomphrey was commissioned into the 5th Gurkha Rifles around 1943.
